The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated former Canadian Football League (CFL) star Jovan Olafioye on his induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, Class of 2025.

Olafioye, widely regarded as one of the most consistent offensive linemen in CFL history, enjoyed a remarkable career that spanned nearly a decade. Best known for his years with the BC Lions, Olafioye played eight seasons with the Vancouver-based team, where he earned multiple All-Star selections, won the Grey Cup in 2011, and was voted the CFL’s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman in 2012. His leadership and durability on the offensive line made him one of the most admired figures in the league.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Dabiri-Erewa praised Olafioye’s induction as both a personal triumph and a moment of pride for the Nigerian community across the world.

“This honour is a source of pride not just for Olafioye, but for Nigeria and the global Nigerian diaspora,” she said. “His induction demonstrates the expanding influence of Nigerians across diverse sectors, particularly international sports.”

The NiDCOM boss further noted that Olafioye’s journey reflects the resilience, talent, and determination of Nigerians striving for excellence abroad. She urged young athletes to draw inspiration from his story, emphasizing that discipline and hard work can pave the way to recognition at the highest levels of professional sport.

Olafioye’s induction was confirmed earlier this year when the Canadian Football Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2025, which includes other notable CFL veterans. The induction ceremony will take place in Hamilton, Ontario, during the annual Hall of Fame Game, where Olafioye and fellow honourees will be formally enshrined.

The Canadian Football Hall of Fame, established in 1963, recognizes outstanding contributors to the game in Canada. Inductees are selected based on career achievements, impact on the sport, and lasting legacy. Olafioye’s inclusion underscores his role in shaping the modern CFL offensive line standard.

Dabiri-Erewa stressed that Olafioye’s recognition strengthens the narrative of Nigerians making global impact, inspiring a new generation of sportsmen and women.

“His story will continue to encourage aspiring talents, both at home and abroad, that persistence and dedication open doors to the world stage,” she added.

Olafioye’s induction cements his legacy as one of the greatest offensive linemen to play in Canada and adds another chapter to the growing influence of Nigerian-linked athletes on the global sports map.
