A prominent Nigerian community leader in South Africa has urged compatriots living in the country to conduct themselves with integrity and responsibility, stressing the need to protect Nigeria’s image abroad.

The President of the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa, Reverend Frank Onyekwelu, made the call while delivering a New Year message to members of the Nigerian community. He emphasised that Nigerians must act as credible representatives of their homeland by demonstrating excellence, discipline and respect in their daily engagements.

According to him, unity within the Nigerian community remains critical, regardless of ethnic, religious or personal differences. He encouraged Nigerians to strengthen bonds of brotherhood and work collectively toward peaceful coexistence among themselves and with South Africans.

Onyekwelu expressed concern over the loss of Nigerian lives recorded in the past year, involving confrontations with law enforcement agencies, locals and internal disputes within the community. He described the incidents as deeply troubling and avoidable.

He advised Nigerians to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary conflicts and prioritise dialogue when disagreements arise. Emphasising the sanctity of life, he warned that reckless behaviour and unresolved disputes often escalate into tragic outcomes.

The community leader concluded by calling for renewed commitment to lawful conduct and mutual respect, noting that a united and responsible diaspora community would foster better relations with South African authorities and the wider society.
