A court in Ahmedabad, India, has sentenced a Nigerian man, Christian Arinze, to 20 years in prison after he was found guilty of drug trafficking. The ruling followed a trial over the illegal importation of narcotics into the country.

Arinze was convicted alongside a Zambian national, Hanchabila John, who was implicated in the same case. Authorities said both men were linked to a heroin trafficking operation uncovered at the airport in Ahmedabad.

Investigators revealed that John was arrested on September 3, 2021, shortly after arriving at Ahmedabad Airport from Dubai. Officers from India’s narcotics enforcement agency intercepted him during routine checks.

During a search conducted at the airport, officials discovered approximately 2.75 kilograms of heroin concealed in his possession. The seizure led to a wider investigation that eventually connected Arinze to the trafficking attempt.

Following the investigation and court proceedings, the Special Court handling narcotics and psychotropic substance cases in Ahmedabad delivered its verdict. The court ordered both convicts to serve 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.

In addition to the prison terms, the court imposed a financial penalty of 200,000 Indian rupees on each of the convicts.

Authorities said the judgment sends a strong message about India’s strict stance against international drug trafficking and other narcotics-related crimes.

The development comes amid growing scrutiny of criminal cases involving foreign nationals in several countries, including incidents in West and Southern Africa involving Nigerian citizens in recent days.
