The Chinese government has announced that citizens of the United Kingdom and Canada will be eligible for visa-free entry beginning February 17, 2026. The new arrangement allows short-term visits without the need to obtain a travel visa in advance.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, holders of ordinary passports from both countries can enter for up to 30 days per visit. The waiver applies to travel for business, tourism, family visits, cultural exchanges, and transit purposes. The policy is scheduled to remain in effect until December 31, 2026.
The announcement follows recent diplomatic engagements between Chinese authorities and leaders from the two countries. In January, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney travelled to Beijing for high-level discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
During the visits, both sides signaled interest in improving economic cooperation and expanding people-to-people exchanges. Visa facilitation emerged as a key outcome of those talks.
Chinese officials said the move is designed to promote international exchanges and ease travel between China and partner nations. The decision is also viewed as part of broader efforts by Beijing to deepen diplomatic and economic ties with major Western economies.
Analysts note that the development comes at a time when global alliances are shifting and countries are recalibrating foreign policy priorities. By simplifying travel requirements, China is positioning itself as open to renewed engagement with London and Ottawa.
Travelers from the UK and Canada planning trips after February 17 are advised to confirm entry requirements with airlines and relevant authorities to ensure compliance with the 30-day limit and other travel regulations.
