Aminat Alabi Wins 10th Lagos Women Run, Makes History for Lagos

Lagos long-distance runner Aminat Adenike Alabi has emerged winner of the Open Category of the 10th edition of the 2025 Lagos Women Run (LWR), crossing the finish line in 39 minutes, 25.80 seconds to become the first woman from Lagos to clinch the top title in the history of the race.
The 10-kilometre race, which kicked off from Tafawa Balewa Square and ended at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena, Onikan, showcased hundreds of women runners from across the country. Alabi’s win earned her a cash prize of ₦2 million, cementing her place among Nigeria’s elite marathoners.
Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, described the milestone 10th edition as “a decade of consistency, commitment, and impact.” He highlighted the event’s role in promoting community cohesion, wellness, and economic empowerment through sports.
For a Lagosian to win this edition shows that every corner of the state is rich with talent,” Fatodu said, adding that Lagos will continue to create platforms to discover and nurture sporting excellence.
Coordinator of the Lagos Women Run, Tayo Popoola, reflected on the journey of the initiative, which began as a casual idea and has evolved into a major platform for women’s empowerment and community building. “The race is not just about competition, it’s about happiness, connection, and growth,” she said, noting its inclusivity for women of all ages and fitness levels.
Alabi, visibly emotional after her victory, dedicated the win to her coach and training partners. “I trained hard for this, determined to be the first Lagos marathoner to bring the title home,” she said.
Vivian Obadiah finished second with a time of 39:55.12, winning ₦1.5 million, while Elizabeth Nuhu Power came third with 40:39.83, taking home ₦1 million.
