The Afenifere Diaspora USA has faulted the All Progressives Congress, raising alarm over Nigeria’s worsening security situation and expressing concern about potential threats to the country’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement dated March 20, 2026, the group warned that persistent violence across several regions could escalate into a broader national crisis if not urgently addressed. It stressed that safeguarding lives and property remains a fundamental constitutional duty of the government.
The statement, signed by Chairman Prof. Sikiru Fadairo and Secretary David Adenekan, described the current security challenges as alarming, cautioning that failure to act decisively could deepen divisions and instability within the country.
The group cited constitutional provisions, noting that the welfare and security of citizens must remain the primary responsibility of any government. It also referenced fundamental human rights protections, including the right to life and personal liberty.
Afenifere Diaspora condemned recent attacks in the North-East, alleging that insurgent activities have led to heavy casualties, destruction of communities, and mass displacement of residents. It warned that such developments undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and global standing.
The organisation further questioned the government’s handling of international perceptions, alleging that public funds were used to influence foreign narratives about the country’s security situation.
On electoral reforms, the group criticised moves to alter eligibility requirements for political office, warning that lowering educational standards for candidates could weaken leadership quality and democratic progress.
It called for strict adherence to credible electoral practices, including mandatory electronic transmission of results, insisting that transparency is essential for free and fair elections in 2027.
