Captain Adebanke Osilaja has earned national praise after becoming the first Nigerian woman to attain the rank of captain at a U.S. legacy airline, marking a significant breakthrough for both the country and the global aviation community.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) announced the achievement while commending Osilaja for reaching a milestone that demands years of intensive training, technical mastery and consistent professional performance.
NiDCOM Chairperson, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the feat as a “proud moment for Nigeria,” noting that Osilaja’s rise reflects the high calibre of Nigerians excelling abroad, particularly in highly competitive sectors.
She stressed that attaining the rank of captain at a major American carrier is no small accomplishment, pointing out that the position requires exceptional competence, leadership, and a proven record of safety and reliability.
Dabiri-Erewa added that Osilaja’s success sends a strong message to young Nigerians, especially girls, who are aiming for careers in aviation or other fields where women remain underrepresented.
According to her, stories like Osilaja’s help dismantle stereotypes and show that excellence, resilience and opportunity can open doors even in the most demanding professions.
This is not the pilot’s first national recognition; Osilaja was among the honourees at the 2025 National Diaspora Merit Awards held in Abuja, where she was celebrated for her outstanding contributions to the diaspora community.
NiDCOM extended warm congratulations to the trailblazer, wishing her continued success as she advances her career in the U.S. aviation industry.
