Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inaugurated a state-of-the-art industrial leather processing and manufacturing hub in Mushin, creating 10,000 direct jobs and positioning Lagos as the leather logistics capital of West Africa.

The facility, commissioned on Saturday by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is designed to optimise production for clusters of artisans in the leather value chain. The hub is projected to deliver more than $250 million in annual export earnings when fully operational.

To honour the First Lady’s contributions to grassroots economic empowerment, Sanwo-Olu named the facility after Senator Tinubu and allocated 70 per cent of its employment slots to women and youths.

Equipped with advanced machinery for mass production of shoes, bags, belts, packaging bags and other leather products, the hub will enable Nano, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (NMSMEs) to scale up production, meet bulk orders, and compete globally.

Speaking at the inauguration, Senator Tinubu described the project as proof of Lagos State’s trailblazing role in industrialisation and job creation. She commended the Sanwo-Olu administration for aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to drive economic diversification through industrialisation, manufacturing, and innovation.

“This hub will serve as a centre for leather processing, footwear production, and specialised training, helping artisans add greater value to their craft and access international markets,” the First Lady said. “It represents how government and citizens can work together to turn challenges into opportunities.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the hub would provide cutting-edge training and start-up support to more than 150,000 artisans, enhance market competitiveness, and attract investment into Lagos’ non-oil export sector.

“The leather hub will create jobs, foster innovation, and serve as an anchor for transforming ideas into globally competitive products,” the Governor said. “From today, hides and skins that once left our shores unprocessed will become world-class footwear, garments, and accessories stamped ‘Made in Lagos, Made in Nigeria.’

Sanwo-Olu pledged to link the hub to fashion districts, e-commerce platforms, and rail services, while ensuring transparent regulation and continuous infrastructure upgrades.

Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Hon. Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, noted that the facility’s modern equipment would help artisans produce high-quality goods at reduced costs, meeting local and international standards.

By operating in shared production spaces with fully functional training rooms, artisans are expected to upgrade their skills, refine production techniques, and grow sustainable enterprises.
