Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is expected to step down from his position as he prepares to pursue a governorship bid in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources familiar with the development indicate that Tuggar will formally submit his resignation to President Bola Tinubu in line with his political ambition under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His planned exit is part of a broader compliance move by political appointees seeking elective offices. The federal government had earlier directed such officials to relinquish their appointments before the end of March 2026.

The directive, issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act and the election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

It affects a wide range of presidential appointees, including ministers, advisers, and heads of government agencies intending to participate in party primaries.

Tuggar’s anticipated departure signals the beginning of political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in states where key federal figures are expected to contest for governorship seats.

His entry into the Bauchi race is likely to reshape the political landscape in the state, with early indications pointing to a competitive contest within the ruling party.
