British–Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku has said her recent Oscar nomination feels “dystopian” because of troubling events happening in the United States. The actress was nominated for her role in the film Sinners.

Mosaku earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Academy Awards, marking a major moment in her career. However, she said she has found it hard to celebrate the achievement.

In a recent interview, she explained that news reports about killings linked to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement have weighed heavily on her. The incidents reportedly took place in Minnesota.

According to Mosaku, it feels strange to receive good news about her career while others are facing pain and loss. She said holding both emotions at the same time has been difficult.

The actress added that she has not felt like going out to celebrate. Instead of enjoying the milestone, she said she has been thinking about the wider social and political situation.

Mosaku also spoke about how quickly people seem to return to normal life after tragic events. She said she finds that reaction unsettling and hard to understand.

Despite her mixed feelings, the nomination remains a significant step in her career. Still, Mosaku made it clear that personal success does not erase the reality of what is happening around her.
