The United Kingdom will begin full enforcement of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) policy for visa-exempt travellers from February 25, 2026, as part of tighter border control measures.

UK authorities have warned that eligible visitors who arrive without an approved ETA will be refused boarding by airlines, train operators, or ferry services travelling to the U

The Home Office, through UK Visas and Immigration, said the authorisation will become a legal requirement for travel, ending the current discretionary checks by transport operators.

The ETA scheme is a core element of the UK’s digital immigration reform, designed to enhance border security while streamlining entry for short-term visitors. It applies to nationals of about 85 countries who can ordinarily visit the UK without a visa, including citizens of the United States, Canada, France, and other European nations.

Nigerians are not affected by the ETA requirement, as they must already obtain a visa before travelling to the UK.

The authorisation covers visits for tourism, business, or short-term study lasting up to six months. British and Irish citizens, including dual nationals, as well as individuals with UK residency rights or valid eVisas, are exempt, though they are advised to carry proof of status.

An ETA currently costs £16 and allows multiple entries over a two-year period or until the traveller’s passport expires.

Applications can be submitted via the official UK ETA mobile app or the GOV.UK website, with most decisions issued within minutes, though travellers are advised to apply several days before departure.
