Authorities in Leicestershire have issued a public appeal to help trace the family of a young Nigerian student who has remained hospitalised for months after being discovered with severe injuries.

The man, identified as 21-year-old Uchechukwu Haniel Kanu, was found on September 12 along Melton Road in the Thurmaston area after officers responded to reports of damaged vehicles in the neighbourhood. Upon arrival, police discovered him critically hurt and immediately transferred him to a local hospital, where he has remained under close medical supervision.

Investigators say Mr Kanu, who lives in Leicester’s Riverside community and holds a valid student visa, suffered significant injuries consistent with an assault. Although his condition has stabilised, he has been unable to communicate sufficiently to assist officers with locating his family.

Detectives confirmed that extensive efforts to reach relatives in both the UK and Nigeria have so far yielded no leads. The investigative team is now urging anyone who knows Mr Kanu or his family to come forward so that relatives can be connected with his medical team.

Police also disclosed that five men, aged 24, 26, 34, 37 and 53, were arrested earlier in connection with the incident. All have been questioned and released pending further inquiries, as the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault continues.

Members of the public with useful information are encouraged to contact Leicestershire Police through official channels, quoting the relevant case reference.
