A Nigerian graduate, Deborah Boms, has returned to Nigeria after months of unsuccessful attempts to secure a visa-sponsored job in the United Kingdom, drawing attention to the growing challenges faced by international students seeking to remain abroad after their studies
Deborah shared her experience on social media, explaining that despite completing her education in the UK, she was unable to find an employer willing to offer the sponsorship required to continue living and working legally in the country.
She revealed that the job hunt was relentless, involving thousands of applications and dozens of interviews, none of which resulted in an offer. The repeated rejections, she said, gradually took a heavy emotional and financial toll on her.
In a video documenting her departure, Deborah captured an emotional phone call with her parents in Nigeria as she prepared to leave the UK. Her father’s words of reassurance, welcoming her home without hesitation, resonated deeply with viewers online.
According to her, while many people saw her adapting to life in the UK, attending classes, and eventually graduating, few were aware of the pressure and uncertainty she endured behind the scenes while trying to secure legal employment.
Deborah admitted that the constant fear of losing everything she had worked for nearly broke her resolve, describing the experience as far more difficult than she had anticipated when she first moved abroad as a student.
Her story has since sparked widespread conversations online, with many international graduates sharing similar experiences and calling for more realistic discussions around post-study opportunities, visa restrictions, and the realities of life after graduation overseas.
