Nigeria recorded strong diaspora inflows in 2023, with the United Kingdom maintaining its position as the leading source of remittances into the country, according to newly released official data.
The figures, published by the National Bureau of Statistics, show that remittances from the UK reached $12.38 billion during the year under review. Although slightly lower than the $12.76 billion recorded in 2022, the UK remains Nigeria’s most significant remittance partner.
Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria also reinforces this trend, highlighting the continued reliance of many Nigerian households on financial support from relatives and associates living abroad.
On the global stage, the United States stood out for recording the highest outward remittance flows, with $13.12 million reported in 2022, reflecting its status as a major financial centre for international transfers.
Beyond remittance flows, the report provides insight into Nigeria’s labour market, particularly within the private sector. It shows a consistent increase in job advertisements over a three-year period.
According to data from the National Electronic Labour Exchange, private-sector vacancies rose from 90 in 2021 to 104 in 2022, before climbing significantly to 150 in 2023, indicating gradual improvement in employment opportunities.
The number of employers registered on the platform also increased, suggesting that more organisations are turning to structured systems to recruit talent and fill available roles.
However, the report notes a complete absence of federal government job postings on the platform during the period reviewed, raising concerns about the transparency and accessibility of public-sector recruitment processes.
