UK Court Orders Deportation Of Nigerian Convicted Of Multiple Attempted Rapes

A United Kingdom Court of Appeal has ruled that a Nigerian man convicted of multiple attempted rapes should be deported after years of legal battles delayed his removal from the country.

The man, identified in court records as OSB, had challenged deportation efforts for several years on the grounds that returning him to Nigeria could expose him to degrading treatment due to his mental health condition.

British authorities had earlier issued a deportation order against him in 2017, but the process was stalled through a series of appeals and asylum-related proceedings.

Court documents showed that OSB suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and argued that inadequate treatment or possible imprisonment in Nigeria could worsen his condition if he stopped taking medication

However, the appeal court overturned earlier tribunal decisions that had blocked the deportation, stating that those judgments were based on speculation about possible future events rather than immediate risks.

In its ruling, the court held that British authorities could not be held responsible for hypothetical scenarios that might occur after his return to Nigeria, including the possibility of relapse or future criminal behaviour.

The judges concluded that the legal threshold required to prevent deportation on human rights grounds had not been met and ordered that the deportation process move forward.

Records presented during the proceedings showed that OSB entered the United Kingdom illegally in 2000 using forged travel documents. His application to remain in the country was denied years later, but he remained in Britain unlawfully after exhausting his appeal rights.

He was later convicted in 2009 over a series of violent sexual attacks in London involving multiple women.

According to the court, one of the victims was a teenage girl who was attacked in an alleyway before a passer-by intervened. Other victims also managed to escape after struggling with him and raising alarm.

Following his conviction, the court ordered that he be detained in a psychiatric hospital instead of prison because of his mental illness.

Medical assessments during the legal proceedings reportedly described him as a continuing danger to the public, with records showing repeated relapses linked to failure to take prescribed medication.

Despite several failed attempts to remove him from Britain, the Court of Appeal has now directed authorities to proceed with his deportation after nearly a decade of legal disputes.
