Thai authorities have arrested six Nigerian nationals in connection with an alleged online romance scam operation in Nonthaburi Province, Thailand.
The suspects were apprehended during a police operation tagged “Dark Room Crackdown,” conducted near the Phra Nang Klao Bridge area in Bang Kraso, Muang district. During the raid, officers reportedly recovered mobile phones, laptops, cash, and other electronic devices believed to have been used in the alleged fraudulent activities.
According to Thai police, the group is suspected of targeting women through social media platforms by using digitally altered and AI-generated images to build fake romantic relationships before allegedly defrauding victims of money.
The six men were identified as Dennis, Ejikeme, Ibekwe, Okorom, Nwosu, and Obielu. Authorities said investigations also revealed that all six had violated Thailand’s immigration laws by overstaying their visas for extended periods.
Police disclosed that Dennis allegedly overstayed his visa by 726 days, while Ejikeme exceeded his stay by 827 days. Ibekwe was said to have remained in the country illegally for 1,166 days.
Thai authorities said the suspects originally entered the country on student visas. However, preliminary findings reportedly showed no evidence that they attended academic institutions or maintained legitimate employment records during their stay.
The suspects are currently being interrogated as investigations continue into the alleged scam network and possible additional victims.
