A Nigerian woman, Gloria Makanjuola, has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a UK court for attacking a passenger and attempting to steal from him on a London Underground train.

The 35-year-old appeared at Woolwich Crown Court, where she pleaded guilty to assault and attempted theft. The court heard that the incident occurred on the night of March 3, 2023, aboard an eastbound Central Line train heading towards Hainault.

Investigators from the British Transport Police reported that the victim was reading a newspaper when Makanjuola sat next to him and asked for money. When he refused, she began rifling through his coat pocket and removed his phone.

The confrontation escalated as the victim tried to reclaim his phone. Makanjuola allegedly pulled his wallet from his pocket, taking £60, and struck him repeatedly while twisting his fingers backward in an effort to overpower him.

As the train arrived at Hainault Underground station, the passenger managed to escape down the carriage. Makanjuola chased him, tackled him near the doors, and then left the station, leaving bystanders to assist the injured commuter.

Detective Sergeant Bronwyn Prew of the British Transport Police described the attack as targeted and aggressive, emphasizing that violent and predatory behavior has no place on public transport. She added that the force remains committed to prosecuting such crimes.

The sentence highlights the UK courts’ firm stance on assaults and thefts on public transport, sending a clear message that offenders will face strict penalties for endangering commuters.
