A 24-year-old Nigerian, Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United Kingdom for the fatal assault of a 56-year-old woman, Nila Patel, in Leicester.
The incident occurred on June 24, 2025, after Ahanonu crashed his vehicle while reportedly driving under the influence of cannabis.
Investigations revealed he had been driving dangerously through the city centre, swerving across lanes, running red lights, and posing a threat to pedestrians before eventually crashing.
After the crash, he fled the scene and attacked Patel, who had just stepped off a bus and was heading home.
She sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull and brain trauma, and was rushed to hospital where she died two days later.
During proceedings at Leicester Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of murder after reviewing evidence and witness accounts.
Further findings showed he had cannabis packaged for distribution in his vehicle, along with multiple mobile phones, and had earlier pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, drug possession with intent to supply, and assaulting a police officer.
Authorities described the incident as a random and brutal attack on an unsuspecting victim, while also commending members of the public whose swift intervention helped restrain the suspect before police arrived.
