A Nigerian national, Ifeanyi Emmanuel Ugwu, has been convicted in the United States for operating an unlicensed money transmission business linked to millions of dollars in illicit funds.
Ugwu, 49, based in Bakersfield, California, entered a guilty plea before a federal court after authorities established his involvement in handling large-scale financial transactions without regulatory approval.
Investigations revealed that between late 2020 and mid-2023, he ran a company identified as Franklin Finance Inc., through which he managed an extensive network of financial accounts.
Prosecutors disclosed that Ugwu controlled about 20 bank accounts across multiple financial institutions, receiving deposits totaling roughly $5 million from over 100 individuals within the United States.
Authorities further stated that a significant portion of the funds originated from victims of online fraud and cyber-related crimes, with at least $580,000 directly traced to fraudulent activities.
The funds were reportedly transferred to recipients in several countries, including Nigeria and China, raising concerns about cross-border financial crime operations.
To sustain the operation, Ugwu allegedly misrepresented the nature of his business dealings to banks and clients, enabling him to bypass regulatory scrutiny while continuing the illegal transfers.
He is expected to be sentenced in July 2026 and could face up to five years imprisonment alongside financial penalties, although the final judgment will depend on federal sentencing guidelines and judicial discretion.
