President Bola Tinubu has begun diplomatic engagement with the British government to facilitate the transfer of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, from the United Kingdom to Nigeria to complete his prison term.

A government delegation comprising the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, recently met with senior UK justice officials in London to discuss the details of the proposed arrangement.

The team also visited the Nigerian High Commission in London, where discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation on prisoner exchange and ensuring fair treatment for Nigerians serving jail terms abroad.

According to top government sources, a formal request for Ekweremadu’s transfer has been submitted under international legal frameworks that allow convicted persons to serve sentences in their home countries.

Ekweremadu is currently serving a nine-year, eight-month sentence in the UK for his involvement in an organ trafficking case. His wife, Beatrice, was released earlier this year after serving part of her sentence.

The federal government’s move is seen as part of broader efforts to ensure Nigerians abroad receive due legal support while maintaining strong diplomatic ties with host nations.
