A Nigerian woman has appealed to Nigerian authorities for urgent assistance after she and several other citizens reportedly remained stranded in Qatar for more than a week following disruptions caused by rising tensions in the Middle East.
The woman, identified as Onyeka, said she had been stuck in the country for nine days alongside other Nigerians who were transiting through Qatar when travel operations across parts of the region became affected by the worsening security situation.
In messages shared online, she described the situation as distressing, noting that the group includes elderly individuals and children who have struggled to secure alternative travel arrangements since flights were disrupted.
According to her, several attempts to contact Nigerian diplomatic missions in the region have yielded little progress, leaving many stranded passengers uncertain about when they might be able to return home.
She also explained that efforts to leave Qatar through nearby countries have been unsuccessful because visa applications tied to Nigerian passports have faced restrictions, making it difficult for them to travel by land or connect through other airports.
Onyeka expressed frustration with officials who visited them, claiming that the representatives appeared unsure about what steps should be taken to resolve the situation.
The travel disruptions follow escalating tensions involving Iran and forces aligned with the United States and Israel, which have contributed to heightened security concerns and interruptions to flight operations across parts of the Middle East.
Responding to the concerns, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocol at the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), said evacuation efforts are complicated by the volatile security environment and restricted airspace.
Balogun noted that large-scale evacuation flights would be difficult to organise while military activities continue in the region, adding that authorities are monitoring the situation and have provided contact channels for Nigerians abroad seeking assistance.
