Nigerian-American driver Ugo Ugochukwu claimed his maiden FIA Formula 3 victory in Melbourne on Sunday, delivering a comeback performance that thrilled fans.
Starting strong but dropping to third at the first corner behind polesitter Théophile Nael and Britain’s Freddie Slater, the 18-year-old quickly regrouped. By Lap 2, he overtook Slater at Turn 9, then Nael moments later to seize the race lead.
Once ahead, Ugochukwu controlled the pace, gradually building a gap over his rivals. The race saw multiple interruptions, including Safety Car deployments after incidents involving Nandhavud Bhirombhakdi and Woohyun Shin, as well as penalties for false starts and collisions affecting Nael and Noah Stromsted.
Slater reclaimed second on Lap 20, but the race concluded under Safety Car conditions, confirming Ugochukwu’s historic win. Japan’s Taito Kato moved up to third following penalties to other drivers.
The victory propels Ugochukwu to the top of the Drivers’ Championship with 25 points after the opening round.
Born in New York City to Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba and her Italian husband, Ugochukwu has an impressive junior racing record, including podiums in the British and Italian F4 Championships and a historic Macau Grand Prix win in 2024.
He also spent four years in the McLaren Driver Development Programme, gaining experience that has now translated into a commanding start in Formula 3.
Ugochukwu’s triumph signals him as a rising talent to watch this season, blending raw speed with composure under pressure.
