Tinubu Hosts Chad’s President Déby in Abuja

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday welcomed Chad’s leader, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between both countries.

The visit is Déby’s first official trip to Nigeria since Tinubu attended his inauguration in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, in May 2024.

Déby assumed leadership in 2021 after the death of his father, former President Idriss Déby Itno, who died during a military operation against rebel forces. He initially led a transitional government before securing electoral victory in 2024.

Thursday’s meeting comes shortly after Tinubu hosted another foreign leader, signalling increased diplomatic activity at the State House.

Although details of the discussions were not immediately disclosed, the talks are expected to centre on regional security cooperation, particularly in addressing insurgency across the Lake Chad Basin.

Chad remains a key ally in Nigeria’s fight against extremist groups, including Boko Haram and Islamic State-linked factions operating in the region.

The meeting also takes place amid shifting alliances in West and Central Africa, following Chad’s recent withdrawal from certain foreign military agreements and broader regional bloc changes.

Nigeria and Chad share longstanding ties, with cooperation spanning trade, culture, and joint military efforts to tackle cross-border threats.
