On Monday, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria welcomed Ghana's President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja. This meeting, disclosed by Tinubu’s Senior Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, via his X handle on Tuesday, underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen bilateral relations.
Olusegun stated, "The President-Elect of Ghana, H.E John Mahama paid a courtesy visit to President Tinubu at his residence, Presidential Villa, State House Yesterday."
This visit occurred one week after Ghana's Electoral Commission, led by Chairperson Jane Mensa, declared Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the winner of the December 7 presidential election, securing 56.5% of the vote.
President Tinubu had earlier congratulated Mahama on his victory in a phone call, following the concession by his main rival, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), who acknowledged defeat to maintain peace and stability.
President Tinubu praised Bawumia for his statesmanship in conceding before the official announcement by Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
John Mahama, who previously served as Ghana's President from 2012 to 2017, is set to be inaugurated on January 7, 2025. His return to power comes amid economic challenges in Ghana, including a recent $3 billion IMF bailout. Mahama has pledged to renegotiate the terms of this deal to better address the nation's economic needs.
During their meeting, President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to deepening the fraternal bonds between Nigeria and Ghana, emphasizing shared history, cultural ties, and mutual goals in democracy, the rule of law, and economic integration.
He expressed eagerness to collaborate with Mahama's incoming administration to enhance bilateral relations across various sectors, aiming for a brighter future in the West African region.
