President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday hosted the German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at the State House in Abuja as part of the German leader’s three-day state visit to Nigeria.
President Steinmeier arrived at the Forecourt of the State House at 11:06 a.m., where he was warmly received by President Tinubu, members of the Federal Executive Council, and other dignitaries. The ceremonial reception featured the rendition of the German national anthem, Deutschlandlied, and Nigeria’s national anthem, as well as an inspection of a guard of honour mounted by the Brigade of Guards. A 21-gun salute added grandeur to the event.
According to a statement released by the German Embassy, the visit is aimed at deepening Nigeria-Germany relations across various sectors. President Steinmeier is expected to meet with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Alieu Omar Touray, to discuss regional cooperation and stability.
The German leader’s schedule also includes a visit to Lagos, where he will interact with business leaders, visit a start-up hub, and engage with members of Nigeria’s vibrant cultural and civil society sectors. Key meetings in Lagos include engagements with Dr. Nike Okundaye, renowned founder of the Nike Art Gallery, and Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka
This visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between both nations. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Nigeria in October, and President Tinubu made a reciprocal trip to Germany in November. The German Embassy emphasized that these engagements reflect the strong bilateral ties and Germany’s recognition of Nigeria’s strategic importance on the global stage.
The visit is expected to yield discussions on trade, investment, energy, and security, further bolstering the partnership between the two nations.
