Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the full exoneration of three Nigerian nationals who were detained in Saudi Arabia on alleged drug trafficking charges earlier this year. The clearance follows thorough investigations by Saudi authorities and coordinated diplomatic efforts by Nigeria.

The individuals, Abdulhamid Sadieq, Maryam Hussein Abdullahi, and Bahijah Aminu Abdullahi, were arrested in August at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah after prohibited substances were discovered in luggage fraudulently attached to their air tickets. Authorities later determined that the suspects were unaware of the contraband.

Upon notification of the arrests, the Nigerian Consulate General in Jeddah, led by Muazam Nayaya, engaged Saudi officials to clarify the circumstances and requested support from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria to assist with the investigations.

Following detailed inquiries, Saudi investigators concluded that the three Nigerians were not involved in any criminal activity. They were subsequently released from detention on September 14 and 15, with all charges dropped against them.

A temporary travel restriction, imposed pending the completion of security and verification procedures, has now been fully lifted, allowing the Nigerians to return home safely.

Maryam Hussein Abdullahi and Bahijah Aminu Abdullahi had already returned to Nigeria on November 5, 2025, after the travel restrictions were removed. Meanwhile, Abdulhamid Sadieq had his travel ban lifted on December 2, and arrangements for his repatriation are in progress.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the successful resolution as a product of persistent diplomatic engagement and timely coordination between Nigerian and Saudi authorities. It emphasized the importance of vigilance against criminal syndicates exploiting travelers’ luggage without consent.

Officials have reassured the public that Nigeria remains committed to protecting its citizens abroad and will continue working closely with international partners to ensure the safety and rights of Nigerians overseas.
