Thai immigration authorities have arrested a Nigerian national, Clinton Ubasinachi Ekechukwu, after an artificial intelligence-powered facial recognition system reportedly identified him as a visa overstayer during a security operation in Phuket.
The 24-year-old was apprehended in Kathu district as part of an intensified nationwide campaign targeting immigration violations and transnational crimes across Thailand. Security operatives reportedly deployed mobile AI facial recognition devices connected to a central immigration database to track foreigners suspected of residing illegally in the country
Authorities said the technology flagged Ekechukwu during a raid conducted by tourist police officers last Friday. Investigations later revealed that he had allegedly remained in Thailand for nearly two and a half years after the expiration of his permitted stay under a 60-day visa exemption arrangement.
An Ivorian national identified as Ousmane Kone was also arrested during the operation after officials discovered he had similarly overstayed his legal residency period by more than two years.
Both men were transferred to investigators at Kathu Police Station, where they are expected to face immigration-related charges before deportation proceedings commence.
Thai officials reportedly praised the effectiveness of the AI facial recognition system, noting that the technology has improved efforts to identify undocumented foreigners and visa violators. Authorities also indicated that similar operations would continue across the country.
The latest arrest comes amid increasing scrutiny of foreign nationals linked to immigration offences and alleged criminal activities in Thailand. In recent weeks, other Nigerians have reportedly been arrested in separate anti-drug operations carried out by Thai authorities targeting suspected foreign offenders.
