A wave of protests swept through a city in South Africa on Wednesday as hundreds of demonstrators demanded the shutdown of a nightclub reportedly associated with Nigerian nationals.
The protesters marched through the city centre, accusing the establishment, identified as California Tavern, of being linked to illicit drug activities. Organisers of the demonstration alleged that the venue had become a hub for criminal behaviour, though no formal court ruling has confirmed these claims.
The protest comes amid growing anti-immigrant sentiment in parts of the country, following recent unrest reportedly triggered by controversial community events involving foreign nationals. Earlier demonstrations had escalated into violence, with reports of looting and destruction of property belonging to other African migrants.
Fearing further unrest, several businesses owned by immigrants shut their doors during the protest, while security forces increased their presence across key locations in the city.
Tensions briefly escalated when demonstrators attempted to gain access to the building housing the nightclub, located within the Belgrave Hotel. Police intervened swiftly, preventing entry and dispersing sections of the crowd to avoid damage and maintain public safety.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that officers had previously carried out operations in the area, including drug seizures, and reiterated their commitment to safeguarding both residents and property regardless of nationality.
Authorities later disclosed that some individuals involved in disorderly conduct were dispersed using crowd-control measures. At least one person was arrested for assaulting a police officer and is expected to face prosecution.
Officials also revealed that multiple criminal cases had been opened in connection with earlier unrest, with arrests already made as investigations continue.
In a significant development, the management of the Belgrave Hotel announced a decision to shut down the nightclub at the centre of the controversy, a move likely aimed at easing tensions and restoring calm in the area.
