In the wake of widespread post-election unrest, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered the formation of a formal inquiry to investigate the deaths and violence that followed her re-election last month. The commission will examine reports that hundreds of people were killed during protests triggered by allegations of electoral irregularities and government repression.

President Hassan, who secured 98 percent of the vote according to the country’s electoral commission, addressed parliament on Friday, expressing deep sorrow over the fatalities and extending condolences to the families of those affected. She emphasized the need for a measured and compassionate approach, particularly toward young protesters who were caught up in the demonstrations. “I am deeply saddened by the incident. I offer my condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones,” she said.

The president instructed law enforcement agencies, including the office of the director of police, to differentiate between individuals who actively committed crimes and those who “followed the crowd” without intent to cause harm. Many of those arrested in connection with the protests have been charged with treason, a crime punishable by death, sparking concerns among rights groups about fairness and proportionality in handling detainees.

The unrest occurred amid an internet blackout imposed during the protests, which the opposition and rights organizations argue was intended to suppress information and prevent mobilization. Reports from human rights monitors indicate that security forces used lethal force against demonstrators, resulting in significant casualties.

President Hassan’s administration has vowed that the inquiry will operate transparently and independently, aiming to hold accountable those responsible for unlawful killings while ensuring that minors and non-violent participants are treated justly. Analysts suggest the investigation will be a critical test of the government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and human rights following the contentious election.

As Tanzania continues to recover from the post-election violence, the president has appealed to citizens for patience and unity, underscoring her commitment to national reconciliation and a thorough review of the events that marred the electoral process.
