Portuguese authorities have arrested a 25-year-old man in Lisbon over his alleged involvement in the 2020 killing of a Nigerian teenager during a violent gang clash in Manchester, United Kingdom.
Investigators said the suspect was part of a group involved in a confrontation between rival gangs in the Moston area of Manchester in November 2020. The clash reportedly involved the use of dangerous weapons including knives, machetes, sabres, and baseball bats
The Nigerian teenager was fatally attacked during the incident after becoming separated from others he had been with while trying to escape the violence. Authorities say members of the rival group caught up with him and carried out a brutal assault that resulted in his death.
Portuguese criminal investigators stated that the suspect fled to Portugal shortly after the attack and had been living in the country while working in the construction sector without formally declaring his identity. He was eventually tracked down and arrested in Lisbon following an intelligence-led operation.
Officials confirmed that the suspect will appear before the Lisbon Court of Appeal, where judges will determine the legal measures to be applied as authorities consider further judicial proceedings.
The arrest comes several years after seven individuals were convicted in the United Kingdom in connection with the killing. Six of the defendants received life sentences with minimum jail terms ranging from about 20 to 24 years. Another individual, who was a minor at the time of the incident, was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
An additional defendant was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter and violent disorder.
Court proceedings previously revealed that the fatal attack occurred amid an ongoing feud between rival street gangs operating in parts of Greater Manchester.
Investigators said the rivalry had intensified through exchanges on social media and lyrics associated with drill rap music culture.
Authorities said the victim had sustained injuries while attempting to flee during the clash and eventually fell behind due to his weakened condition, allowing members of the rival group to catch up with him.
Law enforcement agencies in both the United Kingdom and Portugal say the investigation into the case has remained active, leading to the recent arrest of the suspect believed to have been involved in the killing.
