Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued a firm caution to the Badagry Royal Council regarding the selection of a successor to the late Akran of Badagry. The Governor emphasized that the process must be conducted with absolute transparency and deep respect for the ancient traditions of the kingdom. He stressed that the integrity of the stool must be preserved to maintain the peace that the region is known for.

The Governor’s intervention follows the passing of His Majesty, Aholu Menu Toyi I, who transitioned on Monday, January 12, 2026, after a brief illness. The late monarch’s reign was widely celebrated for fostering stability and unity within Badagry. His death has sparked a period of widespread mourning, leaving a significant leadership vacuum that the state is keen to fill without social or political friction.

During a condolence visit to the Akran’s Palace on Thursday, the Governor’s message was delivered by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Robert. Addressing the royal family and the council of chiefs, the Commissioner urged all stakeholders to resist any form of external manipulation. He reminded them that the eyes of the state are on the selection process to ensure it remains credible.

"I am appealing to you to do the right thing," the Governor’s representative stated, noting that Badagry must remain united. He pointed out that while the transition is a sensitive period, it is also a collective responsibility to uphold the legacy of the late Akran. The state government expects a smooth transition that prioritizes the welfare of the people over individual interests or communal discord.

Local leadership has already signaled its cooperation with the state’s directives. Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, Chairman of the Badagry Local Government Area, pledged full compliance to ensure peace is maintained throughout the exercise. Princess Adetola Akran-Oketunde, the eldest daughter of the late monarch, thanked the government for its support and called for continued collaboration to honor her father’s vision for a prosperous Badagry.
