A coalition of Lagos indigenes living abroad has thrown its support behind Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, endorsing him as their preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election in the state.

The group, made up of professionals and stakeholders from the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, announced its endorsement during a gathering held in London. Members of the coalition said Hamzat possesses the experience, administrative capacity, and understanding of Lagos governance needed to continue ongoing development projects in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Ayodeji Tinubu, who serves as the acting global convener of the movement, described Hamzat as a competent and well-prepared leader with a strong grasp of urban governance, infrastructure, education, transportation, and technology. He said the deputy governor’s years in public service have demonstrated consistency, loyalty, and commitment to Lagos State.

Tinubu noted that members of the diaspora community believe Lagos requires continuity in governance rather than experimentation, stressing that the economic significance of the state makes leadership decisions too important for uncertainty. He added that their support was based on Hamzat’s performance record and contribution to the current administration.

The coalition also maintained that many Lagosians abroad desire a safer, more economically competitive, and globally aligned Lagos, adding that Hamzat’s experience places him in a strong position to bridge local realities with international standards.

The endorsement comes amid increasing political consultations ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State. Hamzat has continued to attract attention within political circles following reports of growing support from influential stakeholders in the state.

Recent political developments have also linked his emergence to backing from senior figures within the Lagos political structure, including members of the Governance Advisory Council, while Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and President Bola Tinubu have reportedly expressed confidence in his leadership credentials ahead of the next electoral cycle.
