Lagos State has disbursed a total of N701,054,344.57 to 232 families of public servants who died while in active service. The payments were presented at a ceremony in Ikeja, with some families receiving up to N15 million each under the state’s insurance scheme.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Finance in partnership with LASACO Assurance and a consortium of underwriters and bankers. It provided an opportunity to formally honour the memory of the deceased workers and support their families during a difficult period.

Commissioner for Finance, Abayomi Oluyomi, described the occasion as both solemn and significant. He noted that while it marks the loss of valued colleagues, it also reflects the state’s commitment to fulfilling promises made to their loved ones.

“Today is painful because we remember those who are no longer with us, but it is important because we are here to provide support and recognition for their service,” Oluyomi said, emphasizing the government’s focus on staff welfare.

He urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, suggesting that the payouts could support education, small businesses, debt repayment, or household stability. “In doing so, you honour the sacrifices your loved ones made,” he added.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Mahmud Alao, reaffirmed that the insurance scheme is a practical demonstration of the government’s responsibility to its workers. He described the payout as both a moral commitment and a demonstration of compassion.

Alao highlighted that the deceased were integral members of families and communities and that their contributions to the state would not be forgotten. He stressed that the scheme ensures families are not left unsupported, even in the face of unexpected loss.

Officials concluded the ceremony by pledging continued transparency in the administration of staff entitlements and reaffirmed Lagos State’s dedication to strengthening welfare policies for public servants. The disbursement serves as a tangible sign of solidarity and support for the affected families.
