The wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Monday urged increased support for survivors of gender-based violence as she unveiled a remodelled Police Gender-Based Violence and Family Support Unit in Ikeja, Lagos.

The upgraded facility, located at the Lagos State Police Gender Unit on Harold Shodipo Crescent, was presented as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s response to domestic and gender-based violence.

Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Sanwo-Olu said the remodelling reaffirms the state’s collective commitment to tackling GBV, adding that the centre has been repositioned to provide hope, healing, and swift intervention for survivors across Lagos.

She noted that the unveiling coincides with the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign observed from November 25 to December 10 to end violence against women and girls.

According to her, this year’s campaign highlights the rising threat of technology-facilitated gender-based violence and calls for stronger action from governments, tech companies, donors, and citizens to curb the menace.

“Gender-based violence is not just a crime; it is a violation of humanity, a breach of dignity, and remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations of our time, affecting nearly one in three women globally,” she said.
She appealed to all stakeholders to intensify support for GBV survivors and reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to addressing the challenge, noting that the upgraded centre stands as evidence of the government’s ongoing intervention.

In his remarks, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, commended Mrs. Sanwo-Olu for her sustained advocacy and described the remodelled facility as a milestone aimed at strengthening justice and protecting vulnerable groups. The event was attended by the wife of the Deputy Governor, Oluremi Hamzat, Attorney General Lawal Pedro (SAN); and the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Bolaji Ogunlende, among others.
