Gov. Sanwo-Olu Pledges Unwavering Support for Lagosians

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially signed the 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, marking a significant milestone for his administration’s developmental agenda. During the ceremony at Lagos House, Ikeja, the Governor used the occasion to issue a stern warning to residents regarding safety and civic responsibility. He vowed that his administration would "leave no stone unturned" in protecting the lives of all Lagosians throughout the fiscal year.

​A major point of concern raised by the Governor was the alarming incident of fuel scooping at the Apapa bridge earlier that day. Sanwo-Olu described the act as a "suicide mission," expressing deep disappointment that residents would risk their lives for a few liters of fuel. He lauded the swift response of the Police and first responders who prevented a potential catastrophe, but warned that such reckless behavior would no longer be tolerated.

​The Governor also addressed the persistent issue of environmental indiscipline, specifically the dumping of refuse on road medians. He announced that the 2026 budget includes significant funding to bolster the capacity of LAWMA and PSP operators. By increasing the fleet of compactor trucks and equipment, the state aims to eliminate the backlog of waste that often leads to flooding and health hazards.

​Sanwo-Olu further clarified the government's position on the recent demolitions in the Makoko area. He explained that the exercise was a preemptive safety measure targeting shanties built dangerously close to high-tension power lines. Despite the necessity of the move, the Governor demonstrated a compassionate approach by announcing that palliatives and relocation stipends would be provided to those genuinely affected by the evacuation.

The signing of the budget sets the stage for a year focused on infrastructure, safety, and strict enforcement of environmental laws. The Governor emphasized that while the government is compassionate, it will not compromise on the rule of law. "We cannot be a lawless set of people," Sanwo-Olu stated, concluding that the overall safety of the city remains the government's highest priority.
