Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has received high praise from the Nigerian Legion for his consistent financial support of military veterans. The Chairman of the Lagos chapter, Akeem Wolimoh, revealed that the Governor has significantly increased donations over the last few years. The state government contributed ₦50 million two years ago and ₦75 million last year to support former service members.

For the upcoming 2026 commemorations, Governor Sanwo-Olu has pledged a further ₦100 million. This funding is part of the Nigerian Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day activities. These funds are vital for the welfare of veterans who have dedicated their lives to protecting the nation's integrity and peace.

In addition to the cash donations, the Governor has provided 500 bags of rice to the Legion. Each bag weighs 25kg and is currently being prepared for distribution to members across the state. This gesture is intended to provide immediate food relief to veterans and their families during the remembrance period.

The annual celebration, held every January 15, has undergone a symbolic change in focus. Following a directive from President Bola Tinubu, the event now honors both retired veterans and those currently in active service. This shift acknowledges the ongoing sacrifices made by soldiers who are currently on the front lines ensuring national security.

Chairman Wolimoh expressed deep gratitude for the Governor's "citizen-focused" leadership. He noted that the support goes beyond mere ceremony, providing tangible help to those who have served. The Legion remains committed to working with the state government to ensure the dignity of all retired personnel.
