Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has emphasised that the foundation for a peaceful, tolerant and cohesive Lagos must be built within the family unit.

The governor warned that society cannot expect a harmonious generation if homes fail to instill empathy, respect and shared values in children.
Speaking at the 2025 International Day for Tolerance held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, he described Lagos as a state of over 25 million people whose diversity makes tolerance a civic duty.
Sanwo-Olu, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, said this year’s theme, “Raising a Generation of Tolerant Citizens – The Centrality of the Family,” should prompt deeper national reflection.

He noted that the family remains the first environment where children learn the values that shape their perception of others and their conduct in society.
“The first lessons of empathy, respect, patience, love and acceptance are not learnt in government institutions; they are learnt at home, from parents, guardians and community elders,” he said.
“Our administration has continued to promote interfaith harmony through active participation in both Christian and Muslim observances, and by institutionalising Isese Day to reaffirm every resident’s right to worship freely,” he added.
Home Affairs Commissioner Olanrewaju Layode described the family as the “first classroom” responsible for nurturing the values needed to build a peaceful and inclusive society, while Permanent Secretary Adewunmi Ogunsanya commended stakeholders for supporting initiatives that promote tolerance across Lagos.
