Nigerian-British music icon Sade Adu has been nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the second time, as organisers unveiled the 2026 list of contenders. The announcement places her among 17 artists recognised for their enduring contributions to global music culture.

Eligibility for nomination requires that at least 25 years have passed since an artist’s first commercial release. The benchmark is intended to assess longevity, artistic influence and sustained relevance in an industry often defined by shifting trends.

Born Helen Folasade Adu in Ibadan and raised in the United Kingdom, Sade rose to international prominence in the 1980s as the lead vocalist of her eponymous band.

Her signature fusion of soul, jazz and R&B carved out a distinct space during an era dominated by high-tempo pop sounds.

Her debut album, Diamond Life, became a global commercial breakthrough, driven by the success of the single Smooth Operator. The project established her refined, minimalist style and positioned her as a defining voice of the “quiet storm” movement.

Across a career spanning more than four decades, Sade has earned four Grammy Awards and maintained a reputation for deliberate, infrequent releases that nonetheless achieve strong commercial and critical reception. Her understated public presence has further distinguished her from many of her contemporaries.

Inductees into the Hall are selected through a voting process involving music historians, industry professionals and previously inducted artists, with fan participation also factoring into the final outcome. This latest nomination signals continued institutional recognition of Sade’s cultural and artistic impact.

The final class of 2026 inductees will be announced later in the year.
