A Tanzanian diaspora leader has called on citizens living overseas to actively promote a positive image of Tanzania and refrain from speaking negatively about the country in their host nations.
Speaking during a television programme in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, the Chairman of Tanzanians living in Sweden, Norman Jasson, said every Tanzanian, regardless of where they reside, has a duty to protect the nation’s reputation and uphold its values.
Jasson stressed that living abroad does not erase one’s roots, noting that many people in the diaspora will eventually return home. According to him, publicly criticizing Tanzania harms not just the country but the individual doing so.
He compared the situation to family loyalty, explaining that no one abandons or disgraces their parents because of imperfections. Instead, he said, responsible individuals seek ways to present their family and by extension their country, with dignity and respect.
The diaspora leader warned that constantly portraying Tanzania in a bad light could have long-term consequences, especially in uncertain global environments where migrants may be forced to return home. He questioned where such individuals would find belonging after damaging the image of their own country.
Jasson also advised young Tanzanians to develop a strong sense of patriotism and to channel their energy into self-development. He encouraged them to use digital tools and online platforms creatively to acquire skills and knowledge that can help them succeed.
Having lived in Sweden for over three decades, he observed that some youths speak negatively about Tanzania on social media, believing it will improve their chances of finding opportunities in Western countries. He dismissed this belief as misleading.
He added that Tanzania has recorded notable development gains in recent years, creating opportunities that young people can benefit from if they are willing to look inward and make productive use of what the country offers.
Jasson concluded by urging Tanzanians at home and abroad to embrace national pride, promote unity, and contribute positively to the country’s image wherever they find themselves.
