Indian security authorities have apprehended two Nigerian nationals suspected of involvement in a cross-border cybercrime operation that allegedly targeted financial institutions.

The suspects, identified as Modebe Joseph, 42, and Sunday Okonkwo, 35, were arrested in Noida, a city in Uttar Pradesh, by officers from the cybercrime unit of the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissionerate.

Investigators say the arrests followed a coordinated operation involving the Cyber Crime Police Station and other security agencies tracking activities linked to a hacking network known as “Solar Spider.”

Police believe the duo were part of an international syndicate that focused on breaching cooperative banks and other financial institutions with weak cybersecurity systems.

According to authorities, the group allegedly exploited vulnerabilities in a bank’s digital infrastructure during the weekend of March 7 and 8, when the institution was closed, allowing the criminals to carry out transactions without immediate detection.

Officials said the operation resulted in the illegal transfer of about ₹7 crore—roughly equivalent to N1 billion—from the affected bank.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Shavya Goyal stated that investigations indicate the suspects were connected to a broader cybercrime network with links to criminal groups operating across several countries, including Nigeria and South Africa.

Law enforcement agencies are continuing investigations to identify other members of the syndicate and trace the stolen funds.
