Anger and grief have erupted within the Nigerian community in South Africa following the death of Ekpenyong Andrew after his reported arrest in Pretoria.
Andrew, a motor mechanic and father of five, was said to have been apprehended on Sunday in the Booysens area while returning home from work. His sudden death has since raised serious concerns among Nigerians living in the country.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) described the incident as disturbing, noting that it has left the deceased’s family and the wider community in deep shock.
According to the union, law enforcement officers had earlier visited Andrew’s residence to conduct a search for illegal substances but reportedly found nothing incriminating.
His body was later discovered at a morgue in Pretoria under circumstances that have intensified suspicion and triggered calls for accountability.
Authorities have confirmed that a murder case has been opened, with an investigation already underway and an officer assigned to handle the matter.
NUSA has condemned the incident, calling for the immediate suspension of the officers allegedly involved and a transparent probe into the events leading to Andrew’s death.
The organisation also urged both Nigerian and South African authorities to ensure justice for the deceased, while appealing to Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm as efforts continue to address the situation through legal means.
