The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has set up a special committee to investigate alleged cases of human rights violations involving Igbos in Nigeria and across the diaspora.

The committee was inaugurated by the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator Azuta Mbata, during a meeting of the group’s Global Executive Council held at the organisation’s national secretariat in Enugu.

Chukwu explained that the committee would examine reported incidents of abuse and identify individuals or groups said to have been unfairly targeted within Nigeria and in foreign countries.

He stated that the committee had also been tasked with developing a framework for engaging affected persons and carrying out visits to better understand the circumstances surrounding the allegations.

The committee is headed by Chizoba Iheka, the Assistant National Legal Adviser of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide. The organisation expressed confidence in his legal background and experience to lead the assignment effectively.

Ohanaeze reiterated its commitment to protecting the constitutional rights, dignity, and welfare of Igbos globally, stressing that no Nigerian should face discrimination or unlawful treatment because of ethnicity or political perception.

The organisation further called on security agencies, civil society groups, and human rights bodies to cooperate with the committee in the interest of justice, fairness, and national unity.

Ohanaeze assured members of the Igbo community worldwide that it would continue to pursue lawful measures aimed at safeguarding their rights and security.
