The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, Damilola Ogunbiyi, has been named a recipient of the 2026 TIME Earth Award, in recognition of her contributions to climate action and sustainable energy development.
Ogunbiyi, who also serves as co-chair of UN-Energy, was listed among six global changemakers celebrated for advancing environmental sustainability and climate solutions worldwide. The recognition was announced by Sustainable Energy for All.
The Nigerian-born energy expert, based in the United States, was honoured for her role in accelerating clean energy transitions across developing regions, particularly in the Global South.
According to details released by the organisation, Ogunbiyi has played a key role in mobilising more than $1.6 trillion in energy financing. Her efforts have also supported over 100 countries while strengthening collaborations with more than 200 partner organisations globally.
She was further credited for leading Nigeria’s $550 million electrification initiative, which has delivered power access to over eight million people, expanding energy inclusion across underserved communities.
Reacting to the recognition, Ogunbiyi emphasised the human dimension of climate action, noting that energy transition efforts must prioritise people and communities to achieve meaningful impact.
The latest honour adds to a growing list of international recognitions she has received in recent years, reflecting her continued influence in shaping global energy policies and sustainable development strategies.
Other recipients of the 2026 TIME Earth Award include British fashion designer Stella McCartney, Swedish business leader Jesper Brodin, and Chadian environmental advocate Hindou Ibrahim, each recognised for their contributions to environmental sustainability in their respective fields.
