The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Diaspora has appointed former professional footballer and entrepreneur, Austin Akpehe, as its Ambassador to China, marking a strategic push to strengthen youth representation and international engagement.

The appointment, which took effect on February 24, 2026, was confirmed by the council’s leadership as part of efforts to deepen economic and diplomatic ties benefiting young Nigerians abroad. The organisation described the move as a step toward expanding opportunities for Nigerian youths within the Asian region.

In his new capacity, Akpehe is expected to represent and promote the interests of Nigerian youths residing in China. His responsibilities include building partnerships with institutions and agencies that align with the council’s goals of youth empowerment, leadership development, and professional advancement.

The council noted that the role will also focus on fostering collaboration between Nigerian and Chinese stakeholders, with an emphasis on sustainable development initiatives and cross-border engagement. Strengthening bilateral relations through youth-driven platforms remains central to the mandate.

Akpehe holds a degree in Corporate Management and possesses a UEFA B coaching licence. Beyond his football career, he has built a profile in international trade and business development, particularly across China, Europe, and Africa.

He currently leads business and sports development ventures in China, where he has been involved in trade facilitation and youth-focused initiatives. His experience spans corporate leadership and advisory roles within commercial and industrial sectors.

The NYCN Diaspora leadership expressed confidence that his global exposure and network would enhance the council’s international footprint and create measurable opportunities for Nigerian youths seeking growth in Asia. The appointment, it added, reinforces its commitment to expanding the global relevance of Nigeria’s young population.
