The National Youth Council of Nigeria (Diaspora) has appealed to authorities in the United Arab Emirates to reassess the continued detention of a Nigerian national, Sodiq Bello, who has reportedly remained in custody for several months without formal charges.
In a statement issued on April 20, 2026, and signed by its president, Ambassador Collins Idahosa, the council raised concerns over what it described as a lack of due legal process in Bello’s case.
Bello, said to be 30 years old, was reportedly intercepted at Dubai International Airport while transiting to Ghana for a brief vacation in November 2024. Since then, he has remained in detention and is currently being held at a correctional facility in Abu Dhabi.
The council stated that despite the length of his detention, Bello has neither been formally charged nor presented before a court of competent jurisdiction. It noted that he has also not been given the opportunity to respond to any allegations against him.
According to the group, efforts had earlier been made through its UAE chapter to draw the attention of the Nigerian High Commission in Dubai to the situation. However, it stressed that the prolonged nature of the case warranted wider attention
The diaspora body called on UAE authorities to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Bello’s arrest. It urged that he either be formally charged and granted access to a fair trial within a reasonable timeframe or released if no substantial evidence exists.
The council further emphasized the need for adherence to international human rights standards and due process, noting that such principles are fundamental in cases involving foreign nationals.
While acknowledging the longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship between Nigeria and the UAE, the group said its appeal was made in good faith and with respect for both nations’ legal systems.
It expressed optimism that the matter would receive prompt attention and that Bello’s rights would be safeguarded in accordance with established legal procedures.
