Nigerians in Diaspora Urged to Preserve Heritage as OPU-USA Launches in Washington D.C.

Nigerians abroad have been called upon to safeguard their cultural heritage, uphold shared values, and transmit ancestral traditions to younger generations amid growing pressures of cultural assimilation in host countries.

The charge was delivered at the grand launch of the Oodua Progressive Union (OPU-USA), where the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland and Global Convener of OPU, Iba Gani Adams represented by the Baarejiroro of Yorubaland, Chief Dauda Asikolaiye underscored the urgent need for cultural preservation.

Adams described Nigerian traditions as “a rich tapestry of languages, festivals, arts, music, and social values passed down through generations,” warning that these elements face increasing risks of erosion in the diaspora. He emphasized that assimilation pressures, generational gaps, and cultural dilution threaten the survival of Nigeria’s identity abroad unless deliberate action is taken.

“To face the future together, we must adopt a collective approach grounded in unity and proactive engagement,” Adams said. “By embracing intercultural dialogue and adapting our traditions to new contexts, Nigerian culture will remain resilient and dynamic through the times.”

In his welcome address, OPU-USA National Coordinator, Mr. Afolabi Olurin, celebrated the formal launch of the organisation, which has operated informally for years. He said the event marks a new phase of structured engagement with Nigerians in the United States committed to promoting Yoruba and Nigerian culture on a global stage.

Also speaking, the pioneer National Coordinator of OPU-USA, Mrs. Alice Owolabi now Logistics Director of OPU World Executive expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the group from 2015 to 2023. She praised the dedication of members who have sustained the organisation’s vision despite distance and personal challenges.

The event brought together Nigerian professionals, students, and community leaders across the U.S., who pledged to work collectively in promoting cultural awareness programs, educational initiatives, and cultural exchange forums that showcase Nigeria’s diverse heritage.

Adams concluded by calling for continued collaboration between diaspora communities and homeland institutions to ensure that Nigerian traditions evolve without losing their essence, enriching both Nigeria and the global cultural mosaic.
