A 44-year-old Nigerian woman, Nnenna Oketa, has been charged in Canada after authorities intercepted multiple counterfeit travel documents concealed in an international shipment at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

The case began when officers of the Canada Border Services Agency flagged a large cargo consignment arriving from Nigeria for secondary inspection as part of routine border security screening procedures.

During a detailed search of the 1,600-kilogram shipment, officers reportedly discovered seven fraudulent passports hidden inside a pair of sandals packed within the cargo.

Further examination showed that the seized documents included five passports allegedly issued from The Gambia and two from South Africa, all carrying the same photograph of a man but bearing different names and inconsistent personal details.

Following the discovery, the suspect was detained and the matter was transferred to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Border Integrity Unit at Toronto Pearson Airport for further investigation.

Investigators later confirmed that Oketa was formally charged with possession of forged passports under provisions of the Canadian Criminal Code relating to identity document fraud.

Authorities said the interception underscores the increasing use of commercial cargo channels to conceal illegal travel documents and stressed the importance of advanced screening measures at international entry points.

Officials further noted that collaboration between border enforcement agencies remains critical in detecting and disrupting transnational document fraud networks, while legal proceedings against the suspect are ongoing.
