A Nigerian student, Obasi Chimezirm Princewill, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison in Cyprus after being convicted of sexually assaulting a woman and recording the incident without her consent.
The conviction followed a trial at the Nicosia High Criminal Court, where judges found him guilty on multiple counts related to the attack, which occurred in a student dormitory in the Hamitköy area of Nicosia.
According to court proceedings, the incident took place overnight between March 25 and 26, 2023. The victim and the defendant were known to each other prior to the attack.
Prosecutors established that Princewill unlawfully entered the victim’s room and assaulted her multiple times during the incident. Evidence presented in court also confirmed that he recorded the act without the victim’s knowledge.
A police officer who testified during the trial revealed that authorities had previously received reports alleging similar misconduct involving the defendant. The court heard claims that attempts were made to silence complainants through financial inducement.
In delivering judgment, the panel of judges emphasized the seriousness of the offence, noting that the act of recording the assault and the defendant’s conduct during the investigation aggravated the case.
The court also referenced recent legal reforms in Cyprus aimed at imposing stricter penalties for sexual offences, stating that such measures influenced the length of the sentence.
Public reaction following the ruling has been mixed, with many expressing support for the court’s decision, while others argued that the punishment should have been more severe given the nature of the crime.
