Nigerian Student Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna Elected Co-President of Harvard Law Student Government

Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna, a Nigerian-born scholar, has been elected Co-President of the Student Government at Harvard Law School for the 2026–2027 academic session, marking a notable milestone for the Nigerian diaspora.
Umunna emerged victorious alongside her running mate, Tenzin Yonten, following a student-wide election. She expressed appreciation to her colleagues for their confidence, pledging to deliver inclusive and effective leadership.
Her election has been widely viewed as a significant achievement, reflecting the growing influence of Nigerians in leading global academic institutions.
Prior to her admission into Harvard, Umunna was a 2024 Gates Cambridge Scholar at the University of Cambridge, where she obtained a Master of Philosophy degree in Criminology, focusing on international criminal justice systems.
She previously worked as a Congressional aide to Stephen Lynch, gaining hands-on experience in governance and public service that has shaped her leadership journey.
Umunna earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science from American University, graduating summa cum laude. During her time there, she founded ZeEntry, a nonprofit organisation aimed at bridging the technology gap for justice-involved individuals.
She is also the daughter of Dehlia Umunna, a Clinical Professor of Law at Harvard and Faculty Director of the Criminal Justice Institute. In addition, Umunna recently received the Chayes Fellowship, which will support her internship with the UK’s Public Defender Service, further advancing her work in global legal advocacy.
