A Nigerian national, Emeka Uzor, was shot and killed on Sunday afternoon at a Caltex filling station in Windsor East, Randburg, Johannesburg. The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the safety of Nigerian citizens in South Africa.
The attack reportedly occurred around 3:00 p.m. while Uzor was seated in his vehicle. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with emergency services arriving shortly after the shooting. Authorities have yet to confirm the motive behind the attack.
Uzor, originally from Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, was known locally in Johannesburg’s Nigerian community. His death has been described as part of a worrying trend of violent attacks targeting Nigerians living in the country.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) condemned the killing in strong terms. In a statement, the union called on the South African Police Service to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted.
NUSA also appealed to the Nigerian government to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels, emphasizing the importance of protecting the welfare of Nigerian nationals abroad. The union said it would work closely with the Nigerian mission to monitor the investigation.
Authorities in both countries are expected to collaborate to prevent further incidents targeting foreign nationals. The union highlighted the need for immediate measures to improve safety and reduce the risk of attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.
The union urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding, and report any threats or suspicious activities to the authorities. Community leaders are also calling for stronger local engagement to foster safety and support for the diaspora.
The incident has once again drawn attention to ongoing tensions and security concerns for Nigerians abroad. Observers say coordinated diplomatic and law enforcement responses are essential to prevent further violence and provide justice for victims like Uzor.
